Your options for rubbish removal in Armidale
In short: For a big clean-up, a skip bin is usually the simplest way to remove household or garden waste. Armidale Regional Council doesn't run a kerbside bulky waste collection, so the other option is taking it to the Long Swamp Road facility yourself.
Most Armidale households have two ways to get rid of more rubbish than fits in their bins:
- A skip bin, delivered to your driveway and taken away when you're done.
- Taking it to the tip yourself, at Armidale Regional Council's Armidale Waste Management Facility on Long Swamp Road.
Which one makes sense depends on how much you have, what it is, and whether you have a trailer and the time to do the runs.
Option 1: a skip bin
In short: A skip suits jobs with a lot of mixed rubbish, heavy waste or many trailer loads of garden waste, because you load it at your own pace and it's taken away in one go.
A skip sits on your driveway (or on the street with council approval) for an agreed hire period. You can fill it over a few days, and you don't need a trailer, a ute or anyone to lift heavy items. That matters in Armidale, because council doesn't offer a kerbside bulky waste pick-up. Skips can take bagged household rubbish, furniture, garden waste, soil, bricks and renovation waste, as long as you choose the right bin and tell the operator. They can't take asbestos, gas bottles, batteries, tyres or chemicals in a normal load. See what can go in a skip and the size guide.
For a deceased estate, a house move or a big shed or garage job, see our clean-outs guide.
Option 2: the Armidale Waste Management Facility
In short: If you have a trailer and only a load or two, you can take rubbish to council's facility on Long Swamp Road. Sort your load first, because mixed loads cost more.
Armidale Regional Council's Armidale Waste Management Facility is at 108 Long Swamp Road. Council lists it as open 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 12pm to 5pm on weekends and public holidays, with no entry after 4:45pm. It's closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, New Year's Day and Anzac Day. It only takes card payments, and you check in at the gatehouse first.
Council encourages you to sort your load into the different skips on site, and says mixed or contaminated loads are charged a higher fee. There's a free recycling drop-off for extra paper, cardboard and containers, a free Community Recycling Centre for household problem waste such as paint, batteries, gas bottles and oils (up to 20 L or 20 kg), and a Second-Hand Goods Shop for reusable items. Guyra residents have a waste transfer station in Guyra.
Why is there no bulky waste pick-up in Armidale?
In short: Armidale Regional Council doesn't offer a kerbside bulky waste collection. Bulky items go to the waste facility, where fees apply.
Council's waste FAQs say it doesn't run a bulk waste kerbside collection because it's generally the most expensive option for a council and it leads to more waste going to landfill instead of being recycled. Instead, council says items that won't fit in your bins can be taken to the Armidale Waste Management Facility under its standard fees, and good-condition items can be donated to the on-site Second-Hand Goods Shop.
What about my bins and crates?
In short: Your bins and crates are for everyday rubbish, recycling and food and garden waste, not clean-ups.
Armidale Regional Council's standard service is a 140 L red-lid general waste bin collected weekly, a 240 L green-lid FOGO bin (council's City to Soil program) collected fortnightly, and two black recycling crates collected weekly: one with a lid for paper and cardboard, and one without a lid for other recyclables.
So which is easier?
In short: Pick a skip for big, mixed or heavy jobs. Use the Long Swamp Road facility for a load or two of sorted waste.
- A skip bin usually makes sense for a full clean-out, a renovation, a big garden or shed job, heavy waste, or when you don't have a trailer or the time for several tip runs.
- The Armidale Waste Management Facility suits one or two sorted trailer loads, and the Second-Hand Goods Shop takes good-condition items.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to get rid of a lot of rubbish in Armidale?
It depends on how much you have and what it is. For one or two loads, a trailer run to the Armidale Waste Management Facility on Long Swamp Road, with your load sorted first, may be enough. For a big clean-out, heavy waste or many loads, a skip bin is often the easier option, because you load it at your own pace and it's taken away in one trip.
Where is the Armidale tip and when is it open?
Armidale Regional Council's Armidale Waste Management Facility is at 108 Long Swamp Road. Council lists it as open 7:30am to 5pm on weekdays and 12pm to 5pm on weekends and public holidays, with no entry after 4:45pm. It's closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, New Year's Day and Anzac Day.
Does Armidale Regional Council have a kerbside bulky waste collection?
No. Council says it doesn't offer a bulk waste kerbside collection. Bulky items can be taken to the Armidale Waste Management Facility, where standard fees apply, or donated to its Second-Hand Goods Shop if they're in good condition.
Can I pay cash at the Armidale tip?
No. Council says its waste facilities only accept credit and debit cards.
Where can I take paint, batteries and gas bottles in Armidale?
To the free Community Recycling Centre at the Armidale Waste Management Facility, which takes common household problem wastes up to 20 L or 20 kg. They can't go in your bins or in a skip.
Can a skip bin take garden waste and building rubbish?
Usually, yes, which is one reason people choose a skip. Heavy waste such as soil, concrete and bricks normally needs a smaller bin with a weight limit, and asbestos can never go in a general skip. Tell the operator what you have when you request a quote.
Do I need a permit for a skip bin on the street in Armidale?
A skip wholly on your own property generally doesn't need council approval. A skip on the road, footpath or verge usually needs approval from Armidale Regional Council. See our council skip permits guide for details.
